Rare, early-edition, collectible novel printed the year the title was released so has original cover art. This is a magical story about 2 delightful Japanese dolls that can think and talk like humans, and how they get sent as gifts to Little Nona, a very unhappy young schoolgirl. She's sad because she's been moved from her homeland of sunny, exotic India to live with her difficult Cousin Belinda in England -a land she's not familiar with at all (the food, the people, the landscape is a culture shock) despite being of British heritage herself.
This is a great book about feeling blue, dealing with difficult people, but getting creative and learning to love your life and others. A great story about how people change for the better and the miracles of love that cross every border and culture. Story touches on Japanese spirituality and holy holiays too.
Nona's dolls named, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower, bring sunshine back into her life. Although she can't hear them talk about her since their tiny voices are so light and low, Nona loves them instantly and does everything for them, including creating decorative cut-up bits of paper to hang on a tree to give her beloved dolls a Japanese Star festival, and putting on a Japanese tea party too... all as her cousins hang about, with her annoying Cousin Belinda getting on her nerves. Yet eventually bad-girl Belinda changes for the better too -- the dolls seem to bring out the good in her -- and by the end, Nona is well-adjusted, the dolls are happy in their new home.
This novel is by the famous writer Rumer Godden, the author Demi Moore named one of her daughters after.
Very delightful illustrations - some full page and in color whereas others are half-page or smaller in black and white. 82 pages, once owned by a library so has old fashioned card holder in back and library stamps marks on inside covers, blank endpapers and copyright/title pages.
Story/text pages are thick like cardstock and strong and feel clean and crisp. Light wear on corner edges of book. Front side of cover looks very nice, back is solid golden-yellow and has marks (small spots, pen marks, signs of handling) but won't deter from enjoyment of reading this magical book about 2 talking, kimono-clad dolls.
On exterior cover is a full color illustration of the 2 dolls on front, no paper dust jacket. Minor wear/minor cover ruboff. 6 x 9 inches. Cheerful drawings are by Jean Primrose. Published 1961 in New York. This title may be out of print. Rare copy that when wrapped in tissue paper is a wonderful vintage gift.
To be mailed in US or Canada as registerd mail with tracking. If you live in another country I will ship if willing to use a shipper with tracking like FedX.
This is a vintage collectible, tagged "children" since marketed towards kids book collectors.
