Letterpress Chapbook - The Pool Cleaner's Rite of Spring in Phoenix, Arizona
Description
Aviary Press has just published a short story by award-winning San Francisco writer Scott Buros. This is the first in a series of short story chapbooks, each featuring the work of a different author from the Bay Area. Future books will include work by Kiersten Yount, editor of the Lonely Seagull Magazine, and Roy Murakami, contributor of both a story and many drawings to that magazine. The chapbook is entirely letterpress printed and hand bound. The idea is to get good work out there in the hands of the public, in a beautiful and handmade package. Enjoy!
From the opening:
"For the longest time it was simply a little blue swimming pool with a diving board at one end and wide white concrete steps at the other. A guy like me, a pool cleaner who knows his business, could have cleaned the thing and balanced the PH in under ten minutes without breaking a sweat, even in the hellish Phoenix summers.
But that was all Linda and I needed. Just a tiny square of H2O where we could find some comfort. Even in December Linda would submerge her deep tan skin beneath the surface. That skin of hers was something, smooth and glistening an umber sort of brown. No matter how long she kept it submerged in the pool it never seemed to wrinkle, and she'd put that to the test lounging in the water sometimes for the better part of a weekend in the middle of July.
Now that pool is something else."
