Our sunsets are often as spectacular as our dawns here in this big-sky country at the eastern end of Lake Ontario. This one, of a waning suset, captures the soft glowing peachy rose tints that often spread through the sky from where the sun sets behind the foliage in right foreground.
As you can imagine, a kayak trip toward the horizon at this time of night is like being transported into a heavenly place.

All my (Lynn’s) pastels are sold unframed and without mat. I prefer the velvet peachy texture and unaltered colours of unfixed pastel paintings, and when I am framing for our own display, I frame my pastels matted, under glass without fixative spray. Because of my preferred method of thoroughly finger-blending the soft pastel pigments, my pastel paintings are partly mechanically ‘fixed’ by the finger pressure, without the texture & tone-altering application of a spray fixative.

The purchaser can make their own decision of whether to fix the image prior to framing in discussion with their framer. The size quoted is the size of the paper--I paint right to 3 edges with pastels, and at the upper edge there’s a ½” wide strip of varying lengths where the paper was attached to my easel. All pastels are signed and dated by me in the lower right corner with a ¼” allowance for the mat. I use Strathmore or Canson pastel paper and pro quality soft pastels.

The shipping quote is for airmail. Pastel paintings will be shipped in a snugly-fitting Crystal clear bag firmly sandwiched between two pieces of taped-together foam core. The foam core provides support and protection from damage during shipping, and also eliminates movement of the image against the crystal clear bag surface. Buyers can expect to find some imprinting of the pastel image against the bag when the painting is removed, but this will be minimal and will not perceptibly alter the painting.

I was first intrigued by pastels early in 2007 when a fellow watercolourist started to get stunning results with this medium. Now soft pastels are my preferred painting medium---I love working directly with the pure pigment in mixing shades with my fingers. I love the direct, tactile involvement in creating textures and tones. It’s the closest painting has ever comes to sculpting for me in terms of the tactile + visual satisfaction.
