Dragon Snail with mushrooms - Kinoko, OOAK mixed media sculpture

Kinoko, #14 in the Dragon Snail™ series, makes his home in the deep forest among the fungus. His "beak" helps him dig tasty insects out of the deadwood, as well as nip morsels from the mushrooms. (Kinoko takes his name from the Japanese word for mushroom.)

Kinoko's body design is quite snail-like, especially the "foot," which has an undulating edge. His horns are continuous with his head, inspired by snails' eyes. The rest of his head is, of course, decidedly un-snail-like. He has an unusually shaped skull, and a hooked beak reminiscent of a parrot's.

I love his unique coloring, even if I do say so myself. :-) Red-orange blends beautifully into dark teal and midnight blue, and the yellow spots on the (real) seashell continue seamlessly in a dorsal pattern.

Each of the larger mushrooms has detailed "gills" painstakingly sculpted underneath the cap. A shiny dark green beetle resides near the apex of the tallest mushroom.

This piece may be displayed as shown in a curio cabinet, or it may be securely attached to an elegant custom-made wall-mount shelf (see last photo). The shelf is organic in form to follow the contours of the driftwood, and is painted a glossy midnight blue to complement Kinoko. The mushrooms are permanently attached to the driftwood base, though Kinoko is removable. A wingnut is firmly embedded inside his body, and the driftwood and wall-mount shelf have holes to allow a screw to pass through them into the Dragon Snail, creating a solid unit. The shelf mounts flush to the wall. (Easy-to-follow instructions for assembly and mounting will be included, as will all necessary screws. Shelf, base, and Dragon Snail will be separated for safe shipping.) Kinoko will arrive with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.

Kinoko alone is 4.25 inches long from nose to tail, and 2.5 inches tall without the base. The driftwood base, with mushrooms, is 7 inches long and 7 inches tall. The wall-mount shelf alone is 8 inches long (left to right), 3.75 inches tall (with mounting plate below the shelf), and 4 inches deep (wall to front).
The entire unit assembled is about 10.75 inches tall.
