Description: With about 4-ounces of yarn and a pair of super fat needles, in about 90 minutes you'll have a scarf you can be proud to give as a gift or wear yourself. I just went into my stash and found some chunky yarn left over from a project which I double stranded, or you can carry triple strands of worsted/bulky weight yarn.
Whatever weight you use, you'll need around 4-ounces of yarn for a scarf that measures 52" long x 4.5" wide. (Less yarn is needed for a scarflette that measures 21" x 4.5", and more yarn needed for a longer scarf.)
About the pictures: I used Katsara soft, chunky weight Labrador thick-thin fine wool in a color I call Hematite (charcoal with little hits of purple & green.) I doubled the scarf around the mannequin, and embellished it with one of my handcrafted scarf sticks. The bottom picture shows another smooth yarn worked in the same seed stitch pattern on the same big needles.
90 MINUTE SEED STITCH SCARF
Note: Throughout this scarf, you will carry two strands of yarn in the chunky weight, or 3 strands if you use bulky/worsted weight. (This is sometimes stated in knitting patterns as, "work two strands as one.")
Yarn Options:
1) Chunky Weight, doubled through the pattern, approx. 200 yards total (4-oz)
2) Worsted/Bulky Weight, tripled throughout the pattern, approx. 300- 350 yards total (4-oz)
Needles: US #35 (19mm)
Approx. Gauge: 7 sts = 4 inches
Instructions:
Carrying 2 (or 3) strands of yarn, cast on 7 stitches loosely.
Row 1: Slip 1 knitwise, {p1, k1} 3x to end of row.
Rows 2 & all subsequent rows: Repeat row 1, until you have enough yarn left for one last bind-off row.
Bind off loosely in pattern.
Finishing: Weave in the tail ends, weaving each strand separately rather than doubled.
