Vintage Historic Print - Pastoral by Boucher (1703-1770)
Description
This beautiful museum quality print "Pastoral" by Francois Boucher (1703-1770) has an interesting history. This is a wonderful collector's item to own, as this print is not your normal print, but is a vintage, very old print of a much richer quality than modern examples. It shows life in the 18th century of the aristocracy and their frivolous outings.
This painting was commissioned by the financier Trudaine for his new chateau at Montigny-Lencou. This great pastoral offers a characteristic Boucher blend of elegance and ruticity.
Boucher, who best embodies the frivolity and elegant superficiality of French court life at the middle of the 18th century. His career was hugely successful and he received many honours, becoming Director of the Gobelins factory in 1755 and Director of the Academy and King's Painter in 1765. He was also the favourite artist of Louis XV's most famous mistress, Mme de Pompadour, to whom he gave lessons and whose portrait he painted several times.
This print is approx 9-3/8" x 6 and is stamped on the back "Library-S.T.C.-West Chester,PA"
