The Meaning

Once a man was walking along a beach the night after a storm had sent forceful waves that covered the beach with stranded starfish. Off in the distance, he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and the water picking up starfish and tossing them back into the sea.

The man was stuck by the the apparent futility of the task. There were too many starfish. So many of them were sure to perish.

As he came up to the person he said, "You must be crazy! There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The person looked at the man. He stooped down and picked up one more starfish, tossed it into the sea and said, "It makes a difference to this one."

About Her Heart's Wish

In early 1999, a mother and wife diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer had a final wish - to be able to cook a batch of cookies with her children and to spend one last vacation with her husband. The founders of Her Heart's Wish responded to this request by providing her with treatments that gave her the strength to cook with her children and then surprised her and husband with a Valentine's Weekend vacation by the sea. This act of compassion spawned a charity that is dedicated to granting the last wishes of terminally ill women across the country.
