Wood Fired Bowl 2

Description

This bowl is a perfect all around bowl for your favorite soup, salad, or even ice cream! I threw this bowl form on the wheel using stoneware clay, with an emphasis on the thick rim. The wood and soda firing glazes the exterior of the bowl giving it the vivid markings of the fire and varied tones you see all over the piece. If I'm lucky, I get a trace of wood ash lining the inside the bowls as this one has.

Exterior colors include a beautiful variety of earth tones such as gray, white, red, orange, tan, gold.

Interior is glazed with a durable white shino glaze, including colors of peach, gold, and tan with light specks of ash from the wood firing.

As with all of my pottery, the surface decoration is the direct result of the firing process. The flame of the wood burning kiln encircles the pottery leaving behind traces, depositing ash, and flashing the surface of each piece in a distinct manner. Additional variation on the surface comes from the soda vapors swirling through the kiln in the final hours. The result is pottery which presents a record of the firing process, with warm earth tones and variation from side to side.

Each piece is hand stamped with a "W" that shows the mark of the potter, which is a unique element of design that I add to my work.
