Illusion Knitted Chanukah Miracle Blanket/Wall Hanging - Judaica - Jewish Knitting Pattern
Description
This blanket (or wall hanging) is in commemoration of the story of Chanukah. The letters inside the Dreidels send the message, "A Great Miracle Happened There" meaning Israel. If you live in Israel, it is slightly different, to say, "A Great Miracle Happened Here." This is where this design gets its name.
The Dreidel, shown in each corner, is the toy children play a betting game of sorts with, as well as a salute to the heroes of this time of old. Each of the letters
on each side also represent a number for which they play for "Chanukah Gelt" which are the gold chocolate coins, nuts or whatever they like best.
The Menorah in the center shows it fully lit on the 8th day. It is said that there was only oil, sufficient to light only for one day. By a miracle of G-d, it continued
to burn for eight days. This is the visual celebration of that time.
This is a Kosher Menorah. The candles are burned to different levels for artistic interest.
What is Illusion Knitting you may ask??? Illusion Knitting is a very old technique. It is thought to date back to the early weavers and knitters of Japan. Though it
looks difficult to do it is very easy to accomplish.
The design acts as a hologram. Now you see it... Now you don't!! It's as if by magic!!! Look at it one way and all you see are stripes, but look at it again and as if by magic the design is visable. It’s great fun to watch the pattern come to life, right before your eyes. It is very eye-catching and makes for a wonderful conversation piece for either your home decor or as a wearable and functional work.
It's fun and easy to do. As long as you can knit and purl you can accomplish this technique.
This sample was knitted out of a worsted weight in medium blue and white, which are the traditional colors of Israel. You can easily choose your own color combinations.
The pattern includes easy to follow instruction sheets and the graph of the design.
Finished project approx. Measurement: 34 in. h x 42 ½ in. w. The size will depend upon your tension, choice of yarn and needle size, but you should come very close.
