Echidna Encounter - Signed Print of Original Ink Drawing - 8x10inches (20x25cm)

Description

Australia is the home to some of the most unique, unusual, and simply strange creatures. This is certainly one of them! Along with the Platypus, Echidnas are the only egg-laying mammals in the world, known as monotremes. I don't know why it is named after a monster in Greek mythology - the real Echidna, or "spiny ant-eater", is an absolutely adorable animal.

While enjoying a bush-walking trail in the Springbrook National Park (on the border of Queensland and New South Wales states of Australia), my husband and I were so lucky to encounter a real wild Echidna - a TRULY rare sight. This ink drawing was inspired by our encounter!

This Echidna had surprised us completely - we turned a corner and there he was on the path ahead! He sniffed the air, and waddled right toward us. He looked up right at us, curious - just as illustrated in this drawing - then slowly turned, backed off, and bulldozed his way through the underbrush on the other side of the path and out of our sight. "Bulldozed" really is the best way to describe the motion - the Echidna was in no hurry, carving a tunnel for himself through the branches and grasses, behind some bushes, and soon even the rustle of branches crackling behind him faded. This is his forest.

As wild as it gets!! It was an absolutely magical encounter.

I've drawn the Echidna just as I remember him, in that moment when he just noticed our presence. I was amazed by the absolutely adorable face and the look of discovery in his tiny eyes!
(For an added bit of fun, I've hidden quite a few little drawn ants, caterpillars, and a beetle, in the illustration - all are what you might find on the forest floor, the Echidna's home. See if you can find them all!)

It will be shipped to you flat, protected by a clear plastic sleeve, carefully sandwiched between two sturdy pieces of recycled cardboard (I try to be as 'green' as I can) and in an envelope.
