CELEBRATE GIRLS 1 original gouache painting featuring girls
Description
"CELEBRATE GIRLS" is the painting that started my career! It was featured on the cover of the May/June 1997 issue of "NEW MOON ~ THE MAGAZINE FOR GIRLS AND THEIR DREAMS" themed "War and Peace".In my last term at art school we were to create our own assignment for a real client. I had always admired "NEW MOON ~ THE MAGAZINE FOR GIRLS AND THEIR DREAMS" it was the first magazine of its kind empowering girls! The editorial board is made up of young women and the magazine was founded by a mom and her twin girls.
I pictured what I thought a cover should look like for their magazine and submitted it.
THIS IS THAT FIRST ORIGINAL PAINTING THAT I SUBMITTED!
Not the final one that I revised.
(my photos don't do justice to the original vibrancy of this painting and it's texture!)
They loved it!
I needed to tweak it to fit the cover format, and also add a little more diversity in the ethnicity of the girls. I painted a second version that they ended up using. (I am also selling the final version.)
In my wildest dreams I saw New Moon loving the painting, using it for the cover, then putting it on t-shirts, magnets, posters and greeting cards in their shop.
It happened just the way that I dreamed. Fulfilling my girlhood dream of being published!! Also making me believe in the power of dreams and desires and shooting for your goals no matter how high they seem.
NEW MOON continues to encourage the dreams and aspirations of young girls. www.newmoon.org
For the past twelve years New Moon been selling the "CELEBRATE GIRLS" poster and other products in their store and still continues to.
I love this original version of the "celebrate girls" painting because it took a lot of gumption to go for it and try a new style. But now it is time for me to let it find a good home where it will be viewed daily and appreciated.
I am sad to keep it stored away in a flat file, and I haven't enough room on my studio walls to display it.
Hopefully it will find a spot in an organization for women and girls!
This would be an ideal situation!
I hope it finds an excellent home!
*** I am also including 3 "Celebrate Girls" Greeting cards, a pin, a magnet and the issue of the magazine the final painting was featured on!
Dimensions: 14 1/2 x 9 1/2
Medium: Gouache on Black Gesso,
Technique: A secret! But creates a unique texture on the gouache paint.
Gouache color is so rich, creamy and soft. If you've never seen it you will be delighted!
Gouache (goo - wash) is a thicker form of artist paint, like watercolor, but opaque like tempera paint.
Yet this is no "kids paint" this is the finest artist's quality gouache. I use Windsor Newton's and Holbein's artist's gouache...very expensive and long lasting.
Did you know that Degas and Chagall used gouache for their drawings and paintings, and they are still vivid today?
You just need to take care of your art piece, as will all fine art, keep it out of direct sunlight, and away from moisture, especially until you can put it under glass.
I also used Indian Ink for the black linework. It is painted on Strathmore Illustration board. This is fine art paper mounted on board as it already has a support for framing.
I hope you will enjoy this painting! I would love for it to have a happy home!
