About This CD:
In spring 2006, my friends and I were frustrated about how our jobs and the general business of daily life made it difficult for us to find the time for making music. My husband proposed a project to help us become more productive: to write and record a song every day for a month. We decided to do it in June and created 30 titles, one assigned to each day of the month. We worked independently and posted the songs online after each was completed.

This project completely changed how I thought about making music. It gave me a lot of confidence; I’m proud that not only was I able to actually complete the project, I even like listening to most of what I made. It gave me license to try ideas that I may have otherwise ignored--or never come up with at all.

Some days were frustrating, like when I only had an hour or so to spare (#’s 8, 18, 20); days when I tried to experiment with music far different from what I normally do, but felt embarrassed by the result (#’s 10, 24); or days when I couldn’t figure out what to sing (#’s 13, 14, 15).

But other days were exhilarating, like June 5th, a beautiful clear-blue-sky afternoon when I recorded from my window the sounds of birdsongs and neighborhood kids playing; June 26th, my first “disco” song; the 29th, my first use of a harmonica; or June 19th, when I recorded the strongest thunderstorm of the month (though I saved the loudest thunderclap until the 30th to close the album).

A really strong feeling of “creative community” evolved over the month. We were so focused on making these little songs! Our days became so simplified: get up, go to work, come home, make music. Repeat. I gained weight and our apartment was a mess. Every evening (or the following morning--we almost always worked on the songs well past midnight) we would listen to what we each had made. It was really nice. I miss that feeling.

I wrote and recorded all the songs and played all the instruments. I also designed and executed the packaging (using Stumptown's Arigato Pak recycled paper CD case), which contains an insert with lyrics.

I suppose it's possible you might enjoy my music if your music collection consists of things like the Microphones/Mt Eerie, Laurie Anderson, Joanna Newsom, Bjork, Simon & Garfunkel and John Denver and the Velvet Underground and Aphex Twin? The stuff I make doesn't sound like any of those people, but they influence what I do, so there's a chance of crossover appeal, perhaps?
