Anna - Gilded - Monoprint on Metal Leaf

This is an original, hand-pulled screen print by Monique Phillips.

This is a monoprint, meaning there is only one like it. This print was created using traditional screen printing photo techniques and a watercolor process. 4 layers, hand pulled on gold and copper leafed Montval Torchon 280 gsm paper with hand torn edges.

Part of a series of poetry-inspired screen prints, this monoprint is based on the life and work of famed poet Anna Akhmatova. I discovered her work more than 15 years ago, and have long been a fan of her writing.

I incorporated my own drawings of rowenberry with an image of the beautiful poet, pulled over a sealed layer of real gold and copper flakes.

Akhmatova lived through the Bolshevik Revolution and the assassination of her husband (also a writer). While she was too popular among the Russian people to be assassinated, her work was heavily censored.

The screen print measures approximately 9"x9", and is signed on the back. The actual print is already sink mounted, and matted to fit a 12x12" frame.

I Taught Myself To Live Simply by Anna Akhmatova

I taught myself to live simply and wisely,
to look at the sky and pray to God,
and to wander long before evening
to tire my superfluous worries.
When the burdocks rustle in the ravine
and the yellow-red rowanberry cluster droops
I compose happy verses
about life's decay, decay and beauty.
I come back. The fluffy cat
licks my palm, purrs so sweetly
and the fire flares bright
on the saw-mill turret by the lake.
Only the cry of a stork landing on the roof
occasionally breaks the silence.
If you knock on my door
I may not even hear.
