Wharncliffe Bladed Utility Knife With Redwood Burl Handle
Description
SV1 – This Wharncliffe knife is made from Sandvik 13C26 stainless steel and measures 8 ½” overall with a 4 ¼” blade. I made this knife through stock removal, so it is not hand forged. The tang is hidden. The guard is a sandwich of steel and cow bone, with a little black Inlace™ thrown in for good measure. The flowing handle is carved from a redwood burl. The blade is stamped AR and SV1 as it is the first (and, to date, only) knife I made from Sandvik steel.Materials of interest:
Sandvik 13C26 Steel: A fairly simple stainless alloy from Sweden with good sharpenability (0.65% Carbon, 0.4% silicon, 0.65% manganese,13% Chrome). It should not rust.
Redwood burl: A beautifully figured hard softwood from California. Rich red-gold color with much darker whorls and eyes.
Inlace™: a commercial dyable epoxy resin compound that I use to fill holes and other gaps in some materials.
