This full bellied pitcher is my favorite shape to make, particularly at the gallon size. Very small variations in the length of the neck or in the taughtness/angularity of the curve and the treatment of a handle that fills the hand make such a huge difference in the overall character of the form that there are tireless incarnations of this pot. You will be surprised at how light this vigorous pitcher is. To be realistic about its functional potential it has to be because a gallon of liquid weighs eight pounds.

The best of a given series gets glazed only on the interior, typically with a local clay slip. Leaving the exterior bare emphasizes the form and its strength as well as allowing a classic wood fired look- the bare clay is colored by ash and other impurities carried on the draft of the flame leaving it toasted or flashed.
