Moon and Star Stained Glass with Swarovski crystal star

Were you looking up at the night sky last month when Venus and the Moon were close? A marvelous night, I was on the phone to all my friends to quick, run outside and look at the Moon. "Where is it?" they all said. I bit my tongue and didn't say, "In the SKY, DUH!" I just said, "Look up and toward the West."

Wow, was it ever neat!

I can see how the sight would be revered by ancient civilizations. I know it's not extremely rare, but you don't see it all that often with the waxing crescent and the super bright planet (the star to most people).

This stained glass piece tries to capture a piece of that beauty and a note of whimsy in the Man in the Moon face. The Moon is crafted from some remarkable Youghiogheny ring mottle glass so that light shining through actually appears to display the craters on the moon. The sky is a Spectrum whispy midnight blue imagining those thin clouds that the Moon can sometime illuminate so wonderfully. The star (Venus is actually a planet) is a 20 mm Swarovski Lead Crystal octogon which brings dozens of tiny rainbows into your house when direct sunlight strikes it. The outer edge is an iridescent black which shimmers like oil on water in the bright sunlight and the bevel corners make further rainbows, much larger too, with direct sunlight.

Some people will look at this wonderful moon and star and marvel at the way the moon and the star are inset within the surrounding glass. There are a few "experts" who will tell you that this can't be done and that it proves the piece is plastic. Well it is definitely glass. It is modern tools and lots of practice that makes these "impossible cuts" possible. This type of inset is one of our signature styles.

This piece is approximately 16 by 16 and is created in the copper foil technique commonly called "Tiffany style" with a strong zinc frame. It has brass eyes in the upper corners and comes complete with two brass hooks and hanging chain.
