Description

This raku vase was thrown by me on my potter's wheel and raku fired using the "Copper Matte" glaze which produces a variety of colors. When the pot was leather hard, I used slip to decorate the base and inside rim of this piece; adorning it with spirals and dots.

Please note: These copper matte raku pots are very hard to photograph!! I used natural light outdoors to photograph them and when sizing them in "Photoshop" I tried to get them as accurate as possible to the real life colors. However, everyone's monitor is different. Please remember that they may look different in person.

Raku pottery is not functional, but decorative. If you aren't familiar with the Raku firing process, it is much more labor intensive that standard kiln firing. This is why you'll notice that raku and wood fired pots are usually more expensive. For raku, we throw the pots, let them dry, then bisque fire them in the kiln. Then, we mix up special raku glazes, glaze the pots...the videos will take over from here! It's very hot and you end up breathing smokey glaze chemicals--yuck! The firing can take all day long. But, potters love this challenge and the thrill of having your pot emerge from the metal trash cans with flashes of color on them!

Here's a basic video that I found that will give you an idea of the raku firing process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5gpu5ynCxg&eurl=http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&q=raku+firing&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=pmOjScfLCoqhtwek99nSBA&sa=X

(Note: if link doesn't work, there are many other raku videos on YouTube!)
