Hardwood Spread Knife, Artist-Designed
Description
This is the latest version of my kitchen spread knife shown here (from bottom to top) in Maple, Cherry, Zebrawood, Canarywood, Padauk and Bloodwood. These utensils are rough cut, sanded, steamed and then sanded again before oiling with two coats of a natural, food-safe linseed oil. They are ~9.5” long and ~1.5” wide at the blade end. I designed these in CAD and cut against printed templates, giving me the opportunity to create consistent and beautiful artist-designed curves in the wood.
You will need to tell me your choice of wood upon ordering, either through a note in the order itself or through a separate message. The price of $30 is for one spatula, only. Use the additional image at right to select your wood:
A) Maple (Domestic)
B) Cherry (Domestic)
C) Zebrawood (Exotic)
D) Canarywood (Exotic)
E) Padauk (Exotic)
F) Bloodwood (Exotic)
Some may note the irony of exotic woods processed at the “Sustainability Workshop”. I’m the first to agree. As such, please consider Maple and Cherry as my standard woods. The Maple has a soft and velvety feel but may stain if used with dark oils before fully seasoned or treated with a more robust finish. The Cherry is a harder wood and as such it resists staining and denting better than the Maple.
If you just can’t resist, I sometimes cut the exotics because they do offer distinct advantages and characteristics over many domestic woods. They have a natural ability to resist drying and have richer, more exciting color. The Zebrawood and Padauk are lightweight and a joy to handle, while the Canarywood and Bloodwood are heavier, harder and more durable. Of the four, Canarywood may need the most attention and oiling, depending on the way you use it.
Like all woods, these will need some special attention. Never soak them, and try to wash and dry them soon after use with a very mild detergent mixture followed by a hand drying. If they become rough with use (especially likely when new) they are easily refreshed with a very quick sanding with 300+ grit sandpaper and any oils you may already have in your kitchen. For best performance, let the oil dry for a day or two before using again.
