Description: Lance-Leaved Coreopsis is a perennial that can reach a height of 1-2 feet. It has alternate, mostly basal lance shaped slightly hairy leaves 6-8 inches long. Lower basal leaves are mostly entire, while smaller stem leaves may be pinnately lobed. It flowers from late spring through to late summer or fall frost depending on your zone. Flowers measure 2-3 inches in diameter with yellow ray toothed florets circling a yellow center of disc florets. The bright yellow flowers are a favorite of bees and butterflies. The flowers give way to a cup of seeds that resemble ticks. The seeds are a preferred food for small birds. May spread up to 1-2 ft and can be divided every 1-2 years. It is a prolific seed setter and will form naturalized colonies where planted if not kept in check. This native plant is found throughout the eastern part of the United States and in many parts of the western U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It is easily grown and does well on poor soils and dry sites throughout zones 3-9.
