Vintage Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., photochrom art mural postcard circa 1915-1920, # R-44272 published by B.R. Reynolds Co. Unused, 3 3/8 x 5 3/8 inches, very good to excellent condition, front has faintly textured shiny finish, back has smooth matte finish. Slightest corner wear and/or surface wear (visible in photos). No tears or visible creases.From back: "Tennyson-Ganymede - When Jupiter came down to earth to seek a successor to Hebe as Cupbearer to the Gods, he took the form of an eagle, and flying over Mount Ida, saw the Trojan Prince Ganymede, whom he carried off to Olympus. Tennyson in his "Palace of Art" describes, as among the pictures decorating its walls, one of Ganymede borne aloft by the eagle -
Or else flushed Ganymede, his rosy thigh
Half buried in the Eagle's down,
Sole as a flying star shot thro' the sky
Above the pillar'd town."
Photochrom technology is a photomechanical technique that originated in Switzerland in the late 1880's, where a color photo lithograph was produced from a black and white negative. Technique was frequently used on postcards prior to WWII.
