Description

This ink + watercolor painting is framed and ready to hang! The frame is gold painted wood and is 16" x 25". The painting is canvas mounted on board, with artistically tattered edges. The clouds are made with real lace, and the sea is made with Hebrew lettering. It is titled "Tashlikh".

Tashlikh is one of my favorite Jewish customs. It happens during Rosh Hashana (the Jewish new year) and I see it as a ritual of reflection, self-forgiveness and letting go of the baggage you've collected over that year. You go to a large body of water, holding bread crumbs that you are visualizing as embodying everything you've done that year that you wished you hadn't, and then you throw the bread crumbs into the water and let it all go-- starting this year fresh and new.

The Hebrew text is the portion of Micah 7:18 that is traditionally recited during the tashlikh ceremony by the water. This passage talks about G-d's forgiveness and our sins being "cast into the depths of the sea".

As a funny aside, once I was eating some bread-like substance while waiting for the tashlikh ceremony to start. The rabbi's young daughter saw me and said, "Daddy, Daddy! She's EATING her sins!!" I thought this was hilarious, and later thought of it and liked the imagery of "eating your sins". This is what most of us do, when we hold onto all the bad feelings that we could otherwise let go of.
