Ghosts of the Cathars, a limited edition etching
Description
On a visit to the Languedoc in southern France, I discovered the story of the Cathars, a mystical sect that lived during the 11th century. They built beautiful castles and towns on high cliffs in the Peyrénées. Their entire civilization was wiped out when the pope called for a crusade against them, as their beliefs threatened Catholic orthodoxy. It was the first time Christians killed Christians in what was essentially a genocide of the Cathar population. The bones of their fortresses still exist on mountain tops and their ghosts are ever-present and very poignant in this part of the world. Their language was known as Oc and thus the area is named Laguedoc, the language of Oc. Remote parts of this area still shelter wild horses. There are several horse images lost and found in this print. How many can you find? They symbolize for me the memory of the Cathar civilization which dared to exist outside the accepted norms of church doctrine and paid the ultimate price for their beliefs.1 color. Image size is 21.5x29.5cm (approx 8.5x11.5 inches). Paper size is 33x38cm (approx 13x15 inches). There are 10 prints in the edition, but I am only listing 5 here.
Printed on Reina Velin Blanc Nature all-cotton, handmade Italian paper.
