Rosario original handpainted encaustic wax and oil painting on wood

inked by hand,
hand rubbed with cold wax, painted with oil
encaustic [heated wax] fusing of layers.

the portrait is of Rosario Dawson.

this special technique allows the many layers to fuse naturally, thereby producing a dramatic and almost dreamy effect. the light glaze application of oil in some areas allows for the natural grain of the wood to shine through, adding a different dimension to the piece.

this is an ancient practice over 2000 years old called "encaustic painting". it is a revived artform that has been used by a limited number of artist in several ways. the most common form of encaustic painting is done with the application of heated beeswax mixed with resin. i prefer a cold wax application instead, while fusing the colors between application. the result is no less wonderful, and in this way, i'm able to utilize my skills in the details.

special care is to be considered when acquiring an encaustic piece. the item should not be left in a place subject to high temperatures and care should be taken with the surface itself. consisting of wax, it is susceptible to scratches if not handled properly. over time, the wax hardens to preserve the luminosity of the work and items painted 2000 years ago by ancient greeks are still as vibrant today as they were then. the likelihood of the pigments fading is null. being that this requires no varnish, one can buff the painting with a soft clean cloth to bring the shine back to a dull piece.
