Fieldlines is an original hand-pulled relief print in the reduction method where one block gets cut for each subsequent layer. Combining this method with dabbing and overprinting allows for great variation and subtleties in mark making and imagery. I am using artist quality oil-based inks and high quality paper (acid-free, 54g, pure white with a fine rough surface).

The size of the image is 25x20cm with a 3cm border. As with traditional printmaking, the borders are hand-torn to indicate the authenticity of an artist print.

The print is signed, titled and editioned on the front. This print is part of an edition of twelve.

The scene is based on a series of plein-air sketches and pastel drawings of a the fields around where I grew up in Northwest Germany. Interlocking fields are characterised by a variety of lines and marks. The fields are set against a dark forest and surrounded by bushes and grasses
With this print I have approached the traditional relief printing technique with an attempt to create more painterly images by softer, varied and nuanced marks as well as by interlocking the different layers – have a look at the tree trunks in the background or the grasses in the foreground. These are employed to play with the colour planes of the fields.
Part of the series is an exploration of stillness – here I have found the graphic nature of traditional linoprinting an exciting medium to explore and develop the original sketches.
