Urnes Church, Norway - Original Linocut Print

Description

This beautiful little wooden church was built around 1130. It is nestled on a hillside beside Sognefjord, Norway's longest fjord. I first heard about it when I was living in London: I found a plaster replica of a carved doorway at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The carvings of strange mythical beasts were so striking that when I was backpacking in Norway later that year, I made a point of seeking out the original. I love the Viking influences apparent in Norwegian stave churches, and the one at Urnes is the oldest of its kind. The staves, thick wooden columns that line the aisle, are reminiscent of the ancient forest from whence they came, and it is incredible to stand in the midst of these millennium-old trees.

This is a reduction linocut, which means that the periwinkle blue was printed; then the same block was carved some more before being used for the black ink. This is a special print that is part of a very small edition. The print is sold without a frame or matboard, to reduce shipping costs, and to make it as affordable as possible. If you would like to order a matboard cut to size for this print, simply convo me and I will alter the listing. A white bevel-cut matboard costs an additional $7.50.
