St. Mark is often pictured with a winged lion. The lion is said to symbolize the voice of John the Baptist crying out in the desert. Mark's Gospel begins with the story of John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The prophecy the four winged creatures with four faces found in the first chapter of Ezekiel, is believed to represent the four evangelists--Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Ezekiel says that the creatures were human on the front, lion on the right, ox on the left, and eagle behind. Traditionally, Matthew is associated with the winged human form, Mark with the winged lion, Luke with the winged ox or bull , and John with the (winged) eagle. The creatures are spoken of again in the New Testament in Revelations 4:7.
