Pastel Gemstone Butterfly necklace

Who doesn’t love butterflies?.

I always wanted to make a butterfly necklace, but not just any butterfly, and not just any necklace. So one day, I sat down, and sketched my personal view on a butterfly necklace.

Sterling silver frames were hand formed and hammered for strength. The segment were individually coiled with meters and meters of very thin silver wire and embellished with tiny 2mm sterling silver beads. Each little bead was patiently put in place to achieve a lace-like edge.
The wings were filled up with a silver netting made from button gemstone beads in pastel hues: pale blue topaz, citrine, peridot and lilac amethyst. The wings have 4 gemstone accents in the form of oval hand carved beads.

The butterfly body was handshaped and torched at the ends, forming delicate antenae. Then I filled it up with black onyx beads to give it a soft rounded shape.

For the strap I used the same hand carved beads that adorn the wings, together with a combination of hand dyed silk ribbons made by Vikki Clayton.

This piece is quite heavy because of the intricate double weaving and the many tiny gemstones.

Length is adjustable from: 50cm to 56cm – 19 ½” to 22”
Dimensions of the butterfly: 8,5cm x 6cm – 3 ½” x 2 ½”

All metal used is sterling silver that has been oxidised and hand polished to achieve the antique look that complements this little jewel.

To extend the life of this unique jewelry, please do not bring in contact with oils, perfume, water etc.
