Chasing Purple Butterflies, Hand Smocked and Embroidered Girls Dress Size 3

They saw the purple butterflies and Lamb and Rabbit took off hopping and running through the flower-filled, summer, meadow in hot pursuit. Without realizing it had happened, they were soon airborne just like the purple butterflies!

The creation of this dress design is pure whimsy! I found myself holding the fabric one minute, and by the next minute, this whole scene had blossomed in my mind~ Like Lamb and Rabbit, I just went for it and followed the purple butterflies, to its conclusion.

When I bought this fabric I was torn between excitement and uncertainty. Although 100% cotton like I always use,it is different in design than the fabrics I usually use, and I wasn't at all sure if it would work, or if it would be a total disaster. Normally I stay with designs that are very simple; dots, stripes. When I use floral prints I make sure they are very small, so as not to compete or detract from whatever smocking and embroidery I decide to do.

This fabric is of Heidi Grace design. I've never used anything "Heidi Grace" before. The print is definitely larger than what I usually use, but I love the hearts and swirls as well as the gorgeous shade of seafoam-green. I think the print made a great dress that is both whimsical and suggestive of summer- fun, and the "freedom to fly-" or at least to let your mind wander wherever it wants~

This OOAK size 3 hand-smocked, hand-embroidered, dress is smocked entirely in white except for the small background to the central scene, which is smocked in green to match the fabic. The whimsical scene in the middle is stitched using my own technique of combining smocking and embroidery to create a picture or scene.

The sleeves and back button placket are hand-trimmed in a blanket stitch. A few flowers and a butterfly are embroidered between the three heart-shaped buttons on the button placket.

A complimentary matching, hand-embroidered pair of socks is included with this dress.
