MEET YOUR GEMSTONE: GARNET

Most people think of garnet as an inexpensive, reddish stone – but in fact, garnet comes in many varieties and colors. From common red almandine garnet to the rare and expensive emerald green tsavorite garnet, this stone has some hidden depths.

Birthstone stats: Garnet is the traditional birthstone for January, and is the second anniversary gemstone.

Mohs hardness: 7.0 – 7.5

Care and feeding of your gemstone: Clean in warm, soapy water or with a mild jewelry cleaning solution such as Hagerty Silversmiths’ Wash. Don’t steam clean; doing so could cause damage. It is typically safe to place garnets in an ultrasonic cleaner; check with your local jeweler for advice.
