Portraits of Animals, A Plush Catalogue by Zazu Faure

This is a self published catalogue of 2008 original plush creatures. Documents one full year of production of animals from repurposed sweaters.

Humankind is made up of hunter and gatherers. I am a gatherer. My paternal grandmother was a great gatherer (old snapshots, quotes, postcards, balls of string, loose buttons, scraps of paper, all manner of small containers, etc.) My father got that same gene and he passed it onto me. I’ve stored away all these bits and pieces from their lives of gathering, intertwining it with my own. It overwhelms me. What shall I do with all the thread, the buttons, photographs, sketches, used wrapping paper, ribbons and scraps of fabric? I save it all.

This is my cure:

I aim to use all the bits and pieces. Of course, I know that this is futile—I am generating a new collection of scraps as I work. Naturally, I save these too. I turn to my old (saved) childhood toys as inspiration for new forms. I attempt to use everything—to free myself. My new creations have a rich past, a harried present and, I hope, a bright future.
