Hanami is Japanese for "flower viewing". Every year in Japan people gather and hold flower viewing parties beneath the trees to celebrate the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossoms.

I've never been to Japan, but we have our own Hanami in Portland. The tree in my back yard blooms every year the last week of April reminding me to sit back and enjoy the flowers before they fall in a sprinkle of cherry white petals.

With this painting you can look up and enjoy the spirit of Hanami all year long!

I sketched the pattern for this painting from my Cherry Blossom tree. I then burned the patterns into the wood, stained the panel using a watercolor technique, and lightly tinted each flower with oil paint. The piece is finished with a protective coating of satin lacquer.
