Soda fired triangular yunomi, cone 10 w/hakeme (brushed porcelain). height 2.75 x 2.50 width. beautiful koudai (footring)

A short summary of the energy that goes into each unique, hand made ceramic piece by cory Lum. Cory, first throws, then trims each piece. Later the piece is bisque fired then glazed. Please note that each glaze is formulated without lead or any toxic chemicals. Following glazing this piece is wadded either with kiln wadding, consisting of a clay / alumina mix and loaded into a soda kiln. The kiln is then fired to about 2300 degrees fahrenheit in a 16 hour process of preheating and using a water/soda mix introduced by compressed air sprayer at over 2000 degrees. The pieces are later allowed to cool either by 'cooling reduction' in which water is introduced to create a hydrogen reduction (absence of oxygen) or wood is packed into the ports to allow a natural cooling reduction. i personally handle each step of the firing process which allows serendipity to make its magic within the kiln. After each piece is unloaded, rough spots and koudai are wet sanded and pieces not making the artists selection are then destroyed.

Background. Cory Lum was born and raised in Honolulu, hawaii. Lum works primarily as a commercial/advertising photographer. Lum fell in love with the ceramic medium over 10 years ago and has attended ceramic workshops with Takashi Nakazato (karatsu, japan), Ah Leon (taiwan), Gu Mei Qun (yixing teapot maker), Joel Park, Lee In Chin (korea) and is a humble student of Omote Senke (chado). In the late 1990s first saw a Japanese magazine containing the work of Kato Tohkuro and he humbly tried to make a chawan like kato sensei's bowl. Finding the process impossible to create a piece similar with the like energy, flowing shibui, wabi sabi aura, he strives with each piece to embue his own personal creative spirit into each piece.

Lum's hobbies include using eclectic old film cameras, collecting and using nostalgic, funky lenses and pinhole photography. He also enjoys traveling, eating, cooking and tasting red wines and nihonshu (double fermented rice wine).

Artist Statement. Through the voices of my teachers past and present, i strive to create a ceramic piece that each are created by my hands with my personal energy in each piece. All the matcha chawan are thrown and/or handbuilt. Some are altered and then trimmed by my personal handmade trimming tools and fired to cone 10. Note, that no tools are used to shape the bowls, all hand shaped with my finger prints etched into each piece that hopefully will last over 10,000 years as with Jomon era pottery. When throwing ceramic pieces, i believe in a minimalist approach, only hands and a string are used in creating each matcha chawan. In addition, each of my tools that i use are made from cocobolo (custom shaped), guava and more. Each tool is custom made and tailored to fit my personal needs.
