Every 30 minutes a child is born who will develop a mitochondrial disease by age 10.

What is mitochondrial disease?
Mitochondrial disease results when there is a defect in the mitochondria (energy producing cells). When the mitochondria fail to produce enough energy to fuel the body’s cells, organ failure and cell death occur.

Helping children battle this disease holds a special place in my heart. My dear friend and Lillipop’s photographer, Amber Ferrell, knows first hand the devastating effects of mitochondrial disease. Her young son Nate (beautifully photographed above) has been battling it from birth. I wanted to do something to help. Amber told me about the “Mike the Mito Turtle Fund” and knew immediately that this would be a great way to bring awareness to mitochondrial disease.

Children living with mitochondrial disease are subjected to a lifetime of invasive and painful tests. This fund was created to provide these children with custom, plush turtles to help ease their way through their journeys. Because mitochondrial disease is an energy deficient disease, “Slow and Steady Wins the Race” has become a motto with the turtle representing the race for the cure.

They feature a comfy back elastic waist, back pocket, a roomy thigh pocket and a signature green turtle applique. The fit is unisex and can be made for any size from 12M to 6X. Simply choose the dominant color you’d like to receive, the waist size of your child, and the inseam measurement (anything from knee length to Capri to full length).
