ACEO original woman read scarf comrade painting on wood veneer by Susan Thau
Description
This miniature work of original art is a combination of woodburning and acrylic painting by artist Susan Thau. The material used is double ply real oak wood veneer which is about the thickness of an average playing card. The painting is standard ACEO size of 3.5 by 2.5 inchesTwo of my greatest joys in life are reading and painting. In my book series, I intend to do an aceo inspired by each book that I read. That will keep me busy for a long time.
With my book club, I read The Red Scarf by Linda Furnivall, which dealt with two women imprisoned in Stalin's work camps in Siberia. The pose of the woman in my work, "The Red Scarf" is taken from a communist-era soviet poster, although my woman is far less frightening than the original. I have taken some poetic license with this painting, since in the novel, it is not a woman who wears the red scarf.
Since most of my art consists of painting on driftwood and other types of wood (please see my e-bay store Beaksnbeacons) I was delighted to find this wood veneer that I could use for for my art cards. I can still woodburn my paintings, and still let the beauty of the wood grain show through as it does in my other work.
Susan Thau has been painting on driftwood gathered from the beaches near her Kent Island home since 1992. A completely self-taught artist, she has developed her own style which combines woodburning and painting with acrylics. Susan particularly enjoys working with driftwood because the great variety in the shape, size and surface texture of each piece of wood makes each painting a true one of a kind. Susan began her career by specializing in portraits of the lighthouses that serve as beacons along our country’s coastline, and is well known at the craft fairs in the midatlantic area. All of the lighthouses depicted are taken from extensive resource material on actual lighthouses, and the artist strives to make her paintings as accurate as possible. She has since expanded her body of work to include decoys, shorebirds, waterfowl, fish, and anything else that strikes her fancy.
