Extraordinary 1950s Vintage Circle Skirt with Japanese Lantern Motif

A true cultural mix of South American tailoring with Japanese imagery is present in this beautifully made vintage circle skirt. As I look at the design motifs which include the incredibly detailed lanterns, I see a variety of images that include pagodas, birds, flowers, candles, underwater life and cacti. The ten stylized lanterns encircle the skirt with five different lantern types and ten different color ways. In the design, each is suspended by a twisted rope which creates the vertical lines rising to the waistband. The fabric is a high quality cotton.

The process is hard to define, as the underside of the skirt shows the colorful striping that appears within the lantern design on the front. I'm unclear whether it was created with a screenprint or some kind of wax resist. I've never seen another garment done in this fashion. Clearly, it stands out from the many interesting and beautiful circle skirts I've collected and sold in my past. The lantern colors include turquoise/teal, lime green, fuschia, white, yellow, blue and gray. All interior seams are pinked and the skirt closes with a side metal zipper topped by two black and white gingham covered buttons. Label reads "Artex Apdo. Areo 1329 Medellin, Col. (As you probably know, Columbia is in South America.)

The skirt diameter measures 212"...a full circle. The length is 30" and the waist is 29". Excellent vintage condition. No holes, stains, odors or anything negative. A fabulous combination of museum quality and wearable size.
