Fleur de Lis Hurricane Katrina necklace - From a limited edition of 80
Description
Limited Edition Stainless Steel Fleur de Lis PendantHurricane Katrina 8-29-05
The fleur de lis has long been a symbol of French heritage of Louisiana and New Orleans and in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this symbol has also come to represent the rebirth of the area. The fleur de lis has been in New Orleans through centuries of wars, disease, floods, and hurricanes and will continue to represent the ciy long after the rebuilding is complete. You now have a chance to own or give a unique piece of stainless steel jewely inspired by Hurricane Katrina that is produced in limited quantities. These pendants were designed and made by John Doherty, designer and worker of metal.
This stainless steel Fleur de lis Pendant, 3/16" thick is part of a limited edition of 80. This stylized fleur de lis incorporates elements of a hurricane symbol. These pieces require work by hammer and by hand and are produced in small quantities at a rate of approximately 10 per month until the edition is complete. Hurricane Katrina flooded approximately 80 percent of the City of New Orleans.
This stainless steel fleur de lis pendant was hand hammered on an anvil in Denver, CO by former Slidellian, John Doherty. He learned metal working the hard way at Southern Shipbuilding in Slidell, LA as a college student during summer breaks. The hammering has created a subtle texture unlike that found on mass produced items. This high quality pendant with a polished stainless steel finish is 2-1/8" tall and is 3/16" thick and should last many lifetimes. The stainless steel has a natural finish and there is no plating to rub off. The fleur de lis pendant includes a 18" black leather, rubber or satin cord. The color is silver even though the pendant reflected other colors in some photos. The piece is numbered and is stamped on the back with JD. A certificate of authenticity and a gift bag with card as pictured is included. The color of the bags may vary.
Hurricane Katrina's storm surge devastated much of John's hometown and this prompted him to create and sell several fleur de lis sculptures to help raise funds for storm victims through www.slidellhigh.org . The first fleur de lis sculpture, # 1/40 was made in September of 2005. This pendant is a progression of the fleur de lis used in those sculptures and even shares the twisted petals which represents the extreme rotational force of hurricanes as well as the current state of many communities in the region. These sculptures can be viewed at: Hurricane Katrina Sculptures or www.johndiron.com .

*Recommended Video, "Kennard vs. Katrina"-
Filmed on location in Slidell, Louisiana with actual footage of the storm surge.
Incredible home video of the waves battering the second storey of Kennard Jackley's home and washing away other homes near the lake in Slidell. This is a must see! David Letterman couldn't do a better job with the commentary! You can purchase his video on www.kennardvskatrina.com
“My friends…Mother Nature is angry today!” “It doesn’t look good for the home team!”
GEAUX SAINTS!
The photos may or may not be of the actual pendant you are bidding on. All pieces of the series are similar but do vary slightly due to the nature of handcrafting.
**John Doherty visited New Orleans while Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on the coast and did evacuate the city but was not a victim of the storm.
