blue and grey glass cufflinks
Description
These glass cuff links were made very carefully, in multiple steps. i make all my murini pattern from scratch in a hot glass studio. The process of making glass murini is a labor-of-love; I start with 3 or 4 various chunks of colored glass. I heat them up individually, and while they're hot, layer them one on top of another (like dip coat for ice cream), and then stretch out the mixed glob of hot glass to a long, thin "cane". I then chop up the "cane" to shorter lengths, stack them back together in a colored cup, or bind the canes with steel wire. (see image 4 as an example of pattern in process).i then load the bundle into a kiln, heat up the bundle and stretch it out again. When the glass is cool, I slice it up (like sushi), and polish each slice. it is only then that i can make different types of jewelry out of them.
For these cuff links, I also cut grey sheet glass into small circles, and fused it to the back of the patterned cabishons. I do this to add physical dimension to the links (so they are less delicate), as well as to camouflage the sterling plated mechanism on the other side.
Black, white and grey murini dots, heated, stretched, sliced and heated again. These cufflinks are the same diameter as an American nickel, is just about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. The backs are double set, industrial strength epoxy, and then resin bonded. that combination makes the hold incredibly strong.
