Description

We are very pleased to offer this classy two piece 1930s tuxedo suit with accompanying suspenders. There are no labels on this exceptionally well made suit, but we are confident it is pre-WWII. Much of the suit has been expertly sewn by hand. The hardware, an iridescent blue Kronen Haken hook and bar on the pants and a Garantie Solidite on the woven buttons of the jacket point to the suit being European made. The suit is made with a jet black (photographs have been lightened to show detail) medium weight, what we believe to be, worsted flannel - the outside is very smooth, heavily napped, and soft to the touch.

The JACKET has a straight front shape with waisted back and is single-breasted with one two way woven button, two bound/slot pockets and one welt breast pocket. Reinforced collar and wide black satin peaked lapels where the collar and lapel have been expertly hand-stitched together at back (see 3rd photo). The set-in sleeves end in a angle cut and have three smaller matching buttons on each of the vented cuffs. There are also two bound/slot breast pockets on the fully lined interior done in a black smooth low sheen rayon (?) and a smooth striped cotton for the arms.

The brace PANTS are adjustable with two bands on either side that thread through an iridescent blue toothed buckle. They have a high-waisted notched back with 2x2 buttons for the suspenders and 2x2 buttons on the front set further apart. They do up with a three button placket fly and the aforementioned hook and bar. One button down back pocket and two generous nicely detailed side slash pockets. The inside waistband, pockets etc. of the pants are also done in a smooth cotton.

We are unsure if the the SUSPENDERS are period. They have leather button loops attached by metal hardware to elasticized bands with two metal toothed slides.

Very classy!

We are limited to five photographs, but we will be pleased to send additional photos for your viewing. Please convo us.

Please rely on the following for fit:

MEASUREMENTS:
(laid flat and taken on the outside then doubled in inches)

JACKET:
Shoulder to shoulder at back (padded): 18.5
Arm: 26.5 inseam: 18
Chest- underarm to underarm: a tight 44
Waist: 42
Hips: 44

TROUSERS (PANTS):

Top of waist to middle of crotch: 14.5 Leg - inseam: 30.25
Note: these were too long by several inches for my husband who at 5'9" (34" waist) wears a 30" inseam. The measurement of waist to crotch on his pants measures 11.5; so on these the crotch hangs low.
Leg - top of waist to bottom from the side: 42.5
Leg - top of waist to bottom from the front: 42

VINTAGE RATING/CONDITION
(see chart below):
Excellent condition! JACKET - a small ghosting of a spot on the upper part of the right lapel (on your left when you supersize first photo) more visible in the photo than in person and normal wear from age 1) on the very tips of the peaked lapels 2) the opening near the front button and on RHS side pocket. PANTS - the adjustable bands on the sides each have a small area of shredding caused by the teeth of the buckle when they were worn to fit a smaller sized waist - normal wear and, by our estimation, very minor. Otherwise, the suit has no rips, tears, stains, moth craters or malodor. It has been very well preserved. A remarkable suit!

VINTAGE RATING CONDITION CHART:
MINT: like new - no apparent wear
NEAR MINT: minimal, gentle wear from aging, no notable flaws
EXCELLENT: normal wear from aging, does not affect the wearing
VERY GOOD: worn, minor noted flaws, does not affect the wearing
GOOD worn and flawed only gentle wearing recommended
CUTTER: flawed - for study or as a pattern template
