Ruby is red corundum, all other varieties of corundum being referred to as sapphire. In the jewelry industry, it is assumed that rubies have been heat treated unless otherwise specified, as is this one. The Gemological Institute of America and other certification authorities ACCEPT this treatment; it is permanent and will not degrade over time. Some are lead glass infused, this stone is NOT. Corundum is the second hardest substance on the Mohs scale with a rating of 9 and is classified as one of the "precious" gemstones. Ruby is the birthstone of July and also used to celebrate 15th and 40th anniversaries.
