Messalonskee Moppet Vintage Outsider Art Rag Doll Phoebe
Description
Introducing on of a collection of rag dolls found by my mother at a roadside sale in Waterville, Maine in the early 80's. We've named them "Messalonskee Moppets" after the river that runs through that part of Maine. These are made by an unknown woman that was regularly selling her homemade rag dolls.
My mother totally fell in love with them and she began a collection and would often give them to people that suitably appreciated them. I was one of those recipients.
As you can see the creator of this doll was ahead of her time. They are to me certainly collectible and have that "outsider art" charm.
Of course these are no longer meant for children and can be displayed thoughtfully singly or in an attractive grouping. They are bound to elicit comment as they have in my home for years. Yes, of course I'm keeping some for myself, you can't make me sell them all!!
They are lovingly albeit crudely hand sewn, made from bits of genuine double-knit fabric, ribbon and yarn.
Oh, that beguiling smile!
"Phoebe" is approximately 9 inches long by 3 inches wide at the widest part (her chest)
Phoebe is constructed with purple double knit fabric with indian print arms, black yarn hair and a calico pastel print dress and is stuffed with rags. she had turquoise blue yarn eyes.
I hope that you enjoy your one of a kind and expressive "Messalonskee Moppet"
