What You Get:
TWO Queen of Night Iris bulbs
directions
several tablespoons of organic fertilizer
the Story:
Five years ago, I was wandering through a plant nursery when something caught my eye....a dormant Iris bulb labeled "the Queen of Night". I had heard of queen of night tulips, but an iris? I was curious, so I bought it and planted it.
The following spring, wow! What gorgeous results!
The pictures you see are only from the first year. I now have dozens and dozens of these flowers blooming every spring.
the Plant:
In a word: Beautiful.
The Flowers are huge--between baseball and softball size--and they bloom on stalks that are over three feet tall! In shade, they shine a dark purple that is nearly black. In sunlight, a variety of colours shimmer through, from dark reds and inky blues to bright violets.
Also, they smell great! They are very fragrant, with a sweet smell that is faintly like licorice plant.
This plant is a show-stopper that will get a lot of comments and compliments.
And, guess what? Iris bulbs naturally divide each year.
So each spring you will have two or three times as many plants (and flowers) as you did the year before.
Believe me, friends will ask if they can have some of your Queen's "babies" for their own gardens.
How To:
I will give the buyer simple how-to directions, and the bulbs will ship with several tablespoons of organic fertilizer to nourish your plant through the winter.
The foliage will stay green from spring through late fall.
In late spring, tall stalks will emerge, black flower buds will appear and then the huge flowers will open, one by one.
As each flower dies, remove it and the next flower down will bloom.
In late fall, the plant "dies back". Then you just mulch over the plant and the bulb snoozes through the winter. That's it!
