Psychedelic Turban Hat, Vintage 1950s or 1960s, with Velvet and Lame

Description

Turbans have been around for thousands of years but took on a particularly explosive look in the middle of the twentieth century. This vintage turban is made of black velvet and a brightly patterned lame fabric--red, pink, turquoise, yellow, green, and black, woven with gold metallic thread. The hat is only a semi-turban--the top of it is a solid piece of the psychedelic fabric, and the sides are layered with overlapping lame and velvet.

The inside of the hat is covered with a mesh for a nice finish and has a grosgrain ribbon around the inside edge. There are no tags. The hat is 21 3/4 inches (55.3 cm) around the rim, and for those with larger heads (like me) it can be worn toward the back or tilted to the side, rather than pulled down over the forehead.

This hat is in very good condition. There are a few stray threads on the lame, which could be snipped. The velvet is soft and lovely.
