RARE Post Civil War HAIR Necklace 1860s copper TWO CENT Piece LOVE TOKEN
Description
ETSY HOLIDAY SALE!This fabulous necklace came right out of an attic in Pottstown, PA. It is made of human hair, woven into an intricate ladder pattern which coils into a helix. The closure is a loop of human hair, in perfect condition. It took some talent to do this!
Incorporated into the necklace are fluted brass beads. The necklace is 21 1/2" in length, not including the coin, which in itself is spectacular. It is a 2 cent piece, dated 1865. The coin was drilled very close to the last number, but, based on the dates in which this coin was made and careful examination, the last number is most surely a 5. The coins at that time were cut in high relief, and the "we" in "In God We Trust" has worn more than the other words, though a trace of it is still visible.
It was the custom in Victorian times to make mourning jewelry which depicted a loved one, or actually included hair from the loved one integrated into the piece of jewelry. This is a rare find, especially since it is in such excellent condition.
