Cassandra

Description

Cassandra is perhaps my favorite character in Greek mythology, a prophetess who is doomed never to be believed. She is loved by Apollo, who bestows on her the gift of prophecy, but she is a smart girl, and knows of the misery that comes to anyone loved by a god, and so she refuses him. For this transgression she is cursed to have no one ever heed her words. She foretells the fall of Troy, her own capture, and even her own death. It is not a happy story, hers, but there is a powerful dignity to all her actions. She is the true tragic heroine without the tragic flaw; she sees what others do not, and in the end goes bravely to meet her fate.

As I said, she is a favorite of mine. So it seems fitting that the necklace I name for her should be a special one, and this necklace is just that.

Delicate, dignified, and a little bohemian, this necklace combines three beautiful stones for its pendant: deep rich black cherry-colored garnet; delicate transparent green amethyst in a beautiful marquis cut; and a powerful, irregularly shaped labradorite briolette, with a bit of flash and lots of sparkle in its cloudy gray depths, like lightning on a stormy sky. All three stones are wire wrapped to a little loop of sterling, which dangles from a long, 22 inch chain. Finished with a lobster claw clasp for security. All components are sterling silver.

Fit for a princess or prophetess, for owning such a necklace shows nothing if not good foresight...
