Japan is a country that has managed to retain a great deal of its traditional culture. An exciting traditional event is the summer festival. For this summertime extravaganza, crowds of people dressed in yukata, or summer kimono, arrive to participate in the festivities. At this particular festival in Himeji, I was struck by two young ladies who were in traditional wear, but instead of the traditionally patterned fans, they were both wearing ones with cartoon images. I thought that this combination of the modern with the traditional perfectly captures the spirit of Japan.
