Pumpkin Jar
Description
Gourd-juss!This handsome little pumpkin grew from a tiny seed of a thought – “I bet that this great looking iron red/orange glaze would make a very believable pumpkin skin”.
It did.
I start with about 2 ½ pounds of stoneware clay and I throw that clay into a hollow ball. I fuss and fidget the walls of that ball, making it into a pumpkin shape. Some of them I make tall. Some I make short and squat. Still others I make just about as round as a basketball.
The handle starts as a ball of stoneware that I squeeze between my fingers and palm. With a very wet hand, I hold my fingers and thumb steadily apart and start to grow the length of stem by pulling more clay as I move down its growing length. I eventually “grow” that stem into 12 tapered inches of handle that you see sitting atop the pumpkin.
I started making these jars as candy dishes, but as soon as people realized that (just like the pumpkin casseroles I also make) these are microwavable and oven safe, I found I was soon selling many of these pumpkins to spend their lives functioning as vegetable servers.
Late at night I’ve had a few of these pumpkins sneak their way out of the kitchens of their new homes, get online, and email me. According to these emails, the pumpkins seem to enjoy their lives as vegetable servers. As my young niece would say, “Well, DUH.”
The jar measures 6" in diameter and 7" to the top of the stem.
