Description

This listing is for one Shawnee owl salt (or pepper) shaker. Highly collectible, it can often be difficult to find a complete set of s&p shakers from the Shawnee Pottery Company so if you're on the lookout to complete your set, look no further!

This little guy has no chips, cracks, or breaks and comes with the original cork. The handpainted details around the face and feathers are in great shape too. See below for a brief history of the Shawnee Pottery Company.

I do have a complete set of this same owl s&p but with "Cape" and "Cod" handpainted on the chest of each one. This was frequently done with glass and pottery in the 19th century for the tourist trade. Please just convo me if you are interested!

***********************************************************
The Shawnee Pottery Company was located in Zanesville, Ohio and opened its doors for business in 1937. The company took the name of Shawnee, after the Shawnee Indian Village that was located in the Zanesville-Roseville vicinity. The Shawnee tribe lived there before the area was settled and were known to make pottery out of the rich red clay found in the area. An arrowhead that Malcolm A. Schweiler discovered on the site became the trademark of the new Shawnee Pottery Company.

Shawnee mass-produced various and sundry items such as cookie jars, dinnerware, vases, salt and pepper shakers, character figurines, flower pots, lamp bases, and much more. Today, Shawnee's pottery has reached collectible status being so desired that it has become one of the most sought after potteries and most dealers cannot maintain a stock.

After WWII Shawnee, like many other pottery companies, found it could not compete against foreign imports and eventually ceased operation in 1961. Since that time, Shawnee pottery has become one of the most collectible potteries for pottery enthusiasts.
