Description

When Bunny was a little girl, she loved following her big sisters around, hunting for grass with long hair-like roots. She made her first Gullah Grass Doll when she was just 5 years old, learning how to braid hair the way children have been taught in West Africa for centuries.

Now, she teaches children and adults how to make Gullah Grass Dolls at schools, museum workshops and festivals around South Carolina and Georgia.

The Mud Cloth Diva is a glamourous version of those simple dolls. She stands a statuesque 17 inches tall from the hem of her mud cloth skirt to the tips of her Yoruba-inspired coiffure. Bunny designed and made the elegant ensemble. I added the cowries and the belt made from Chinaberry tree seeds.

The dolls Bunny and my Aunt Jeannie make are more dressed up now, with more elaborate hair, but they are stillmade with love.
