Unisex hand felted wool Amish style hat.

Description

Great for cool fall weather, this hand-felted Amish style wool hat is suitable for men and women. Trimmings include colorful rooster feathers from my free-range chickens and a hand woven hat band from Icelandic wool. The sweatband provides additional comfort.

These felted hats have their own unique qualities. Although they have been stiffened with a non-toxic environmentally friendly solution, they are more flexible then the traditional cowboy hat. As they are worn over time, the texture will naturally soften but still retain much of its original shape. If the hat gets over saturated with water or squashed (usually by getting sat on); simple remolding the hat by hand is usually enough to return it to its original shape. We do offer a re-blocking service encase the hat should have an ‘accident’ and can’t be returned to the original shape.

The construction of the hat begins with my Icelandic, Shetland, and Corriedale sheep flock which are raised on lush green pastures in Southern Minnesota. If you would like to see photos of the sheep visit pehlingbayfarm.com. Once the sheep are shorn, the wool is processed at the farm to ensure quality. Then the wool is wet felted, formed to a mold and allowed to air dry. It is then treated with a gelatin based stiffener to help the felt retain its shape and shed water. Finally, the trimmings are added.
