Turk blinked rapidly against the last rays of dying sun. Awakening to the gentle fall of evening. Cool breezes slipped through the branches, ruffling the leaves in a soft whisper of night noises.
Awake now, Turk tilted his head, gazing below the branch he perched upon, observing the fresh layer of newly fallen leaves carpeting the grass below. Autumn was so close he could all but taste it in the air.
Turk was looking forward to Autumn, it would be his very first experience of this season as a living, awakened owl. All those other years before he'd been asleep, drifting through soft cloudy dreams he could barely remember. Now all he could recall of those times was the scent of dust and being crowded on a shelf next to other figurines. Inanimate... Turk shuddered, wings ruffling as if to shrug off the memories of the past. They didn't bother him but they were history, he lived in the now. In the living world, fully awake, just one of the birds.
Well...almost just one of the birds. He did differ slightly, what with having come to life from an inanimate object and all instead of hatched from an egg in the traditional owl way. Plus there was his plumage. While most of the owls Turk had met on his nightly travels, soaring above the lands, had dark grey, black and shades of brown feathers, Turk did not. Turk stood out like a bright star against the dark skies amongst his fellow owls.
His beautiful turquoise feathers with moon beam pearl sheen garnered many a look and at least twice as many hoots. The wild owls, the ones hatched from eggs called out in curiosity. But Turk just fluttered his wings and turned his head in the way that owls do to indicate a smile. What could he say?
He was different, an unusual bird, created by human hand but living the life of a wild, carefree owl just like any other.
Turk spread his wings and let himself tip forward and fall from the branch he clutched. Falling until the air caught beneath his wings and lifted him higher into the sky, away from the ground, night closing around him.
